Over the next few weeks, a 9th grade class at Gymnasium Oberalster will be working on an art project focusing on the Neuengamme Concentration Camp satellite camp, which was located in their district of Hamburg-Sasel in 1944/1945.

Accompanied by their teacher Janna Volland, the students visited the Plattenhaus Poppenbüttel memorial for the first time and learned about the history of the site and the women imprisoned in the Sasel Concentration Camp. They left the site with five memory boxes containing materials on the biographies of five former prisoners. Through reports, photos, newspaper articles, and links to interviews, they will learn about Teresa Stiland, Lucille Eichengreen, Wanda Edelmann, Madeleine Schulps, and Helga Melmed.

The theme of “remembrance” is important—why is it important to remember the places of persecution, and what do young people want to convey about this history? In this collaborative project between the Oberalster Gymnasium and the Hamburg Memorials and Learning Sites Foundation, the students are developing initial ideas and designs for how a visible memorial could be designed in the outdoor area of the memorial site in the future. The results will be on display at the memorial site in January 2026. We can't wait to see them!
