75th Anniversary of the Liberation

Survivors Nachum Rotenberg, Natalija Radchenko

It is with a heavy heart that we must cancel the events scheduled for the 75th anniversary of the Liberation. We are making plans for a virtual commemoration:

30 April 2020

What does the 75th anniversary of the liberation mean to me?
The international commemorative ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps can unfortunately not take place this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. That is why we will hold virtual commemoration events on this website : http://www.kz-gedenkstaette-neuengamme.de/75befreiung (online from May 3rd, 2020 #75liberation). Survivors, their families and politicians as well as the leaders of the Foundation of Hamburg Memorials and Learning Centers and the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial talk about what this anniversary means to them in short videos. In this way they open up individual perspectives which are to ensure this day is marked appropriately despite all the restrictions. Please note that the outdoor area of the memorial remains accessible to public and you can pay your respects on May 3rd while making sure to maintain distance from other visitors.

3 April 2020

It is with deep regret that we have had to cancel the commemorative ceremony we had planned for 3 May 2020 to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the prisoners from the Neuengamme concentration camp. Our intention is to reschedule the international ceremony for next year. However, we want to ensure that this momentous day is not forgotten this year either, so we are making plans for a virtual commemoration. On 3 May 2020 we will be posting short video messages online on a dedicated website. We want to ask those originally invited to the commemorative ceremony, i.e. the survivors and the relatives of the persecuted, but also our guest speakers, what this anniversary means for them personally.

Please note:
In view of the spread of the coronavirus in Germany, it is with a heavy heart that we must cancel the events scheduled for the 75th anniversary of the liberation. The international commemoration marking the anniversary of the liberation of prisoners from the Neuengamme concentration camp is to be postponed to 2021.
Prof. Detlef Garbe: ‘The decision to cancel the commemorations marking this special anniversary was not one we took lightly. However, our foremost priority is the health of our guests. We very much hope to be able to extend our invitations once again next year.’

12 March 2020

In view of the current situation (Coronavirus Pandemic) we cannot guarantee that all events scheduled for the 75th anniversary of the liberation will take place. According to current plans, the commemorative events will be held with a reduced programme. However, we have to bear in mind that there is a strong likelihood of the Hamburg city authorities imposing a general official ban on public events. Our intention is to postpone the international commemoration marking the anniversary of the liberation until next year. For the latest information, please check our homepage at www.kz-gedenkstaette-neuengamme.de, which is updated daily.
