Objects carry memories

What story does this suitcase tell?

The Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial commemorates the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp’s prisoners with a special multimedia report. Survivors and relatives tell their personal stories.

As we are unfortunately unable to commemorate together with many guests from abroad this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we asked ourselves how we could nevertheless make this possible. We asked survivors and relatives for their personal mementos: objects that symbolize their memories or are connected to them.

Each memento sent to us is unique and represents a personal story. We show which memories are connected with people or places, with incidents or encounters – and often with objects. We tell these stories at www.kz-gedenkstaette-neuengamme.de/en/memories.

With the multimedia coverage, survivors and relatives, even if they cannot personally travel to Hamburg for the anniversary of the liberation, are present with their stories, thoughts and wishes. Together, we ensure that this special day is not forgotten.
