Between 22 August and 5 September 2026, young people will once again have the opportunity to take part in the Volunteer Camp.

The Volunteer Camp

Since 1982, international volunteer camps have been an integral part of the memorial’s work on site. They bring together young people from all over the world, enabling them to get to know the site and its stories. This year, the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial is once again organising an international Volunteer Camp in collaboration with Service Civil International (SCI).
The camp language will be in English, meaning that a good knowledge of English or German is a prerequisite for participation.

What will you do there?

Over the course of two weeks, participants can explore the history of the site, engage in conversation with relatives of former victims or former perpetrators, and help with work on the grounds. However, this is not just about the past: issues such as exclusion, discrimination and the protection of democracy are more relevant today than ever. At the Volunteer Camp, everyone has the opportunity to discuss these issues with other international participants, learn about different perspectives and further develop their own views.

We are building up a camp archive
One of the main focuses of this year’s camp is to build up an archive documenting the history of international volunteer camps. The aim is to systematically collect and organise materials spanning over four decades and make them available for future educational work.

Of course, there will also be plenty of time for leisure activities in Hamburg and the surrounding area, as well as for relaxing together.
